SVHOA Board Meeting January 22, 2002Meeting commenced at 7:10 p.m. Board Members in attendance: President Brian Brick and Vice-President Jill Warner (Jennie Brick proxy given to Brian Brick). Board Members absent: Secretary/Treasurer Jennie Brick (but see above re: proxy) Other attendees: Gail Rappl, Matt Cronin
Motion by Brian Brick to waive reading of the prior minutes; motion seconded by Jennie Brick (proxy) and unanimously approved. Brian informed attendees that the Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 19th, should be considered a success, with over 24 Villagers in attendance to meet our new Oakland Police District Commander, Lieutenant Mike Yoell; that the budget was approved; and that the election of proposed Board nominees Matt Cronin and Gail Rappl had been unanimously voted, by the homeowners and Board Members present, to be held at this annual meeting - as Matt had left early due to parental responsibilities and Gail had not attended the Annual Meeting due to work. Election: Gail Rappl was nominated to the Board as Plans Chair by Jill Warner; seconded by proxy vote of Jennie Brick. Gail was elected unanimously. Matt Cronin was nominated to the Board as Parks Chair by Brian Brick; seconded by Gail Rappl. Matt was elected unanimously. Community Policing: The Board discussed scheduling a meeting for a Saturday morning in March with representatives of the Oakland Police Department to re-institute the "Neighborhood Watch" program, or such similar program as is now to be offered by the Police Department. All Block captains are to be requested to attend the meeting. Motion was made by Brian Brick to that effect; seconded by all three Directors present; motion passed unanimously. March 16th was tentatively selected as the target date for the meeting, subject to further discussion by phone and email among the full Board. Related Neighborhood Security Issues: The Board discussed the possible need for security at the Covington Circle and in the two owned parks, given continuing litter problems and the vandalism of the nets and graffiti on the tennis court, Security lighting, motion detectors, locks, and other possible steps were raised, but no decision was reached. The item will be deferred for another meeting, with parks Chair Matt Cronin to commence informal investigation of possible costs/measures and report to the Board. Village Picnic: The continuing drop in attendance at the annual picnic in 2001 was discussed. Matt noted that Brian Kelly, the Villager who has, as a volunteer, successfully organized, supervised, and conducted the garage sale which is the primary source of fund for the picnic, is moving to Chicago in the near future. The Board requested that the Crier contain an article raising the question of whether or not a picnic should be held this year, asking for volunteers to run the garage sale or other fundraising event, and soliciting ideas to improve the picnic (e.g., a basketball tournament, brass band-type music; different food or a pot luck, etc.). Gale Grunert Dinner: The Board was reminded of the upcoming dinner to honor Gale Grunert. Brian noted that the SVHOA does not have a complete library of Criers. The Board requested that a notice seeking old Criers be placed in the next edition of the Crier. 4. New BusinessMeetings: The Board discussed changing the date of the Board Meetings from the fourth Tuesday of the month to the third Tuesday, to accommodate Member's schedules. Further discussion will take place by phone and email among the full Board, after consultation of calendars and work schedules. It was also noted that this meeting had been set for 7:00, rather than the 7:30 start time used in 2001. There was consensus that the earlier time would be more convenient, but again, formal decision was deferred pending discussion by phone and email among the full Board, after consultation of calendars and work schedules. No further action was taken. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
